Professional counselling can help people in many different ways with many different problems. Some common presenting issues include:

- Relationship Problems
- Depression
- Excessive use of Alcohol
- Feelings of hopelessness

- Feelings of Anxiety & Stress
- Bereavement
- Irrational Fears
- Loss of direction

Assessment
The first session generally takes the form of an assessment wherein the the counsellor will take the client's history and listen to their presenting problem. Towards the end of the session, the counsellor will explain the process and conditions of counselling and state whether she is the best person for the client or whether an alternative kind of therapy might be more appropriate. Likewise, the client has the opportunity to ask questions of the counsellor and decide whether this particular person is the one they would like to work with. The majority of assessments result in a positive outcome.

How long will the counselling take?
The assessment session lasts for a full hour; all subsequent sessions last for 50 minutes. Weekly sessions are normally recommended, often reducing to fortnightly if the therapy continues over a longer period. Because people seek professional counselling for so many different reasons; (see About Counselling for more information about counselling) the length of time it will take for an improved sense of well being to occur will depend very much upon both the person and the nature of their problems. Generally, significant improvements may be experienced within 6-12 sessions, or less in some instances: longer term work may sometimes be indicated where deeper rooted problems are evident or, indeed, where a person desires to use therapy as a means of helping them aspire towards their greater potentials.
